Loud and boisterous - which is why they're popular
I looked around and couldn't find an R400 kit for my 2011 STi anywhere, often told it would be weeks to months before availability. These guys had one in stock, shipped fast. Super easy to install - had it installed literally within 20 minutes.
I updated my STi with completely new piping at the same time as the R400: equal length HKS headers, Ultimate Racing uppipe+downpipe (catless) w/ Tial wastegate with dump tube into downpipe, Invidia R400 Gemini (as mentioned) and Perrin TMIC. Car seems completely different in terms of responsiveness with all the old, restrictive piping gone.
Tone on the R400 is really aggressive under throttle. There is noticeable growl with a bit of deep-throated raspy-ness mixed in...really giving the car a characteristic it didn't have before. Not to mention that when you pull your foot off of the accelerator, the lift-off burble and popping noises this thing makes is fantastic.
The R400 has the capability of being a lot of different exhausts, depending on how you're driving: it can be absolute devious sounding under WOT and sharp gear changes or it can be mild and soothing with smooth tones at low-RPM cruising speeds. Most of the time, it's a mixture of each since trying to stay off the radar but all the while keeping that big smile on your face.
